Teaching Practice

Since 2018 Brian has maintained an adjunct teaching practice. During that time he has had the opportunity to teach Portfolio, Typography, and Critical Issues for The City College of New York (CCNY), New York City College of Technology, and Fordham University.

Brian teaches Critical Issues for CCNY every semester. The course is part of the Electronic Design and Multimedia program’s core curriculm. The following principles constitute the course’s key concepts: 1) True authority comes from knowledge of self. 2) The literary arts are often framed as paths to self knowledge. The visual arts are also paths to self knowledge. 3) Artists have a social responsibility to speak the truth via their work. 4) The true purpose of systemic oppression is to distract artists from speaking the truth via their work in service of greed. 5) Artists do not need permission or approval to make their work e.g. writing a novel makes someone a novelist. 6) Design is not about making things look nice, it is about helping things look like themselves. Design is a vehicle for self actualization. 7) Designers have a social responsibility to factor ethics into their ambitions. 8) The design industry needs a diverse range of designers to share their voices in addition to their work. 9) Expect design tools to change. 10) Fear and doubt are often indicators that an artist has risked enough of themselves on the page.
